Beginning in late November, the Visual Arts Gallery will present “Being American,” an exhibition where the works will comment on the current social environment and the multiplicity of experience in American life today.

My project ” The Europeans ” was selected for the Metropolis exhibition.

The main exhibition at Noorderlicht 2011, METROPOLIS, City Life in the Urban Age, deals with the role of the city as the nerve centre of modern global society. It is the second part of a diptych, a follow-up to the 2010 theme LAND, Country Life in the Urban Age, which looked at the shrinking role of the countryside worldwide.

LIBERATION

The French paper LIBERATION published  a few of my pictures a few month ago.

This is the text that goes with it;

Vêtu d’une veste fluorescente, Reinier Gerritsen a depuis 2005 arpenté 25 villes européennes  (De haut en bas: Riga, Poznan et Oslo), tel un géomètre mesurant la foule des passants. Plusieurs prises de vues du même lieu, un mix et une accentuation de netteté réalisés avec photoshop abolissent les plans. Tous pareils, soit européens avant tout, passants étrangers mais réunis par la magie du collage. Suivant le même principe, son dernier travail Wall street stop, portraits d’américains  dans le métro new yorkais après la crise des subprimes a fait l’objet d’un livre publié l’an dernier.

SHANGHAI FLOWERS 1 – tentoonstelling bij Eduard Planting

Na het succes van het fotoboek en de tentoonstelling Wall Street Stop in 2010, waarbij Reinier Gerritsen in de metro van New York de ingestapte passagiers vanaf het perron fotografeerde, maakte hij op uitnodiging van het Chinese magazine The Bund begin 2011 een vervolg op zijn serie in de subway van Shanghai. Als het vertreksignaal klinkt en de deuren van de coupé gesloten worden, maakt Gerritsen vier of vijf opnamen van de passagiers, die hij later op de computer bewerkt tot één beeld, waarop alle mensen scherp staan.
“The guard is down and the mask is off, people’s faces are in naked repose down in the subway.” Aldus Walker Evans, in zijn fotoboek Many are called (1966) van de subway passagiers in New York.  “And the best way to catch them in the act of being themselves, he decided, was to take pictures without their knowledge”.
Met deze benadering en aanpak van Walker Evans voelt Reinier Gerritsen zich verwant. Het sociale masker van de mens valt af en hij toont het ware gezicht.

“Ik zie groepen mensen in de mierenhoop van de city. klik klik klik. En maak binnen enkele seconden een aantal opnames. Als in een film, zie ik een wereld voorbijschuiven. De kijkrichting, de lichaamshouding, de hele choreografie van de groep, waarin van alles gebeurd. Isolatie en liefde, machtsverhoudingen, politiek in het klein. klik klik klik. In de huidige geglobaliseerde wereld levert dit een universeel beeld op. Dit universele en filmische wil ik benadrukken door de toepassing van een nieuwe techniek.  Het decisive moment wordt een decisive minute. Een techniek die nieuw en discutabel is binnen de documentaire fotografie. Ik maak op de computer een reconstructie van de gemaakte opnames en vat zo een instinctieve en filmische ervaring samen tot een nieuw en onvervreemdbaar eigen beeld.”

Gerritsen presenteert zijn eerste serie SHANGHAI FLOWERS  in Galerie Eduard Planting,  Eind september 2011 keert hij terug naar Shanghai om de tweede serie te maken.

Reinier Gerritsen publiceerde in 2010 het fotoboek Wall Street Stop (Hatje Cantz Verlag, uitverkocht) en exposeerde van juni tot september 2010 de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Nederlands Fotomuseum te Rotterdam.
